About this talk

Jewish communities have been a vital part of the Czech lands for over a thousand years, with early settlements appearing in the 10th century. Initially arriving as merchants, Jews quickly became an integral component of Bohemia and Moravia's economic and cultural life. Despite enduring persecution and expulsions, Jewish communities thrived at times, contributing significantly to commerce, arts, and sciences.

Key historical milestones shaped Jewish life in this region. In the 18th century, reforms introduced by Emperor Joseph II paved the way for greater integration and cultural renewal. The 19th century saw a Jewish cultural renaissance, blending modernity with tradition. However, the 20th century brought devastation. The Holocaust resulted in the murder of over 85% of Czech Jews, and under Communist rule, Jewish communities faced further oppression. Nevertheless, survivors' resilience has led to a modern revival, and today's communities strive to preserve their rich heritage.

Join Emma for a 90-minute virtual journey exploring Jewish history in Czechia. Through five cities—Brno, Mikulov, Třebíč, Pilsen, and Kroměříž—you'll discover historic synagogues, cemeteries, and vibrant stories of Jewish life, past and present.
