About this talk
Today, let's take a step back in time to explore the journey from Vilnius to Biržai, a route rich with history and meaning. This path takes us through the heartland of Jewish shtetls—small towns that were once vibrant centers of Jewish life. These communities thrived on trade, scholarship, and a deep sense of community.
As we travel through places like Ukmerge, Anykščiai, Panevezys, Kupiskis, Rokiskis and Biržai, we'll uncover the stories that shaped these towns. Each one played a role in the broader Jewish cultural and religious heritage of this region.
We'll look at what made these shtetls unique: their marketplaces, synagogues, scholars, and artisans. We'll also reflect on how these communities navigated the challenges and changes of their time. These stories aren't just fragments of the past—they're a vital part of the Jewish history and of our collective memory.
