About this talk
Lviv—a city that changed hands many times: from Poland to Austria, then back to Poland, later to the USSR, and finally to independent Ukraine. Jews settled here as early as the 13th century. At its height, the city had around 100 synagogues, both large and small. Jewish religious, commercial, and intellectual life flourished here over the centuries.
Brody—have you ever met someone with the last name Brodsky, Brodovsky, Broder, Bruder, or Brodyansky?
At least one such person is world famous: Soviet poet and Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky. All of these names trace their origins back to Brody. Today, it is a small and little-known town in the heart of western Ukraine. In the past, however, it was one of the most important Jewish centers in Europe.
We invite you to travel through Galicia and explore the uniqueness of its Jewish history.
